Meet The Inn-Keeper
Ciao, io sono Selene!
I’m the founder of The Language Tavern, the home of language, lifelong learning and some laughs too. I’ve always had a passion for foreign languages and how learning a language can help you understand and connect with different cultures around the world.
In fact, I studied Foreign Languages at university in Pisa, where I was born, and studied English, French and Romanian. Along with language, I also have a love of travel and culture, so I pulled up my roots and moved to the UK, where I studied Tourism at Westminster University in 2012. While I was doing that, I worked a range of corporate jobs to pay the bills, but I didn’t really enjoy any of them. What I did enjoy was teaching my colleagues and new starters, who loved learning from me (and often got a few language lessons chucked in too). So I married my love of teaching and languages, and became a language teacher!
Of course, I made sure to do things properly. I took professional courses on teaching Italian to adults at International House, London, learning how to teach a language using the immersive method. This was really transformational for me – it helped me develop the informal style my students love, and get real results. After working for a few different companies teaching languages (including Italian), I decided to go it alone, and so The Language Tavern was born!
Why The Language Tavern?
One thing I took away from my time in the corporate world was that I didn’t want to create that environment in my own business. I wanted to take people on a journey to other countries and cultures, showing them the world and building their knowledge all while they’re enjoying a cup of coffee in their comfy slippers.
The Language Tavern is a place where adventurers come to learn through experience. It’s not just about memorising vocab and doing grammar flashcards. It’s about connecting with your learning style and helping you understand the language in a way that is accessible to you. I’m all about teaching you how a language is actually spoken and how to understand the language, rather than focusing in on grammar rules.
When you work with me and my team of teachers, you can be guaranteed a comfortable seat, coffee and biscuits at
every lesson, as well as a kind ear as we get started. We know that everyone learns differently, and everyone has different interests and reasons for learning a language, and so we adapt our approach to suit you. There’s no official course or curriculum we follow strictly – we move at your pace and make sure you’re confident before we take the next step.
